Community developments projects of STARS aim to develop empower communities in overcoming social, economic, and environmental challenges. These multifaceted projects have tried to create effective and sustainable impact on the living conditions, health and economic status of disadvantaged communities, strengthening their basic needs, livelihood capabilities by establishing systems that foster participation and self-reliance.

Self Help Groups

STARS promote SHGs in Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kannur districts. And we also promote small scale income generation programs through the groups. STARS SHGs’ Objectives are to form and strengthen micro level people’s structures like SHGs and federations, to assure optimum utilization of local finance for income generation and entrepreneurial activities and to promote the capacity building of staff and people’s leaders for people’s bank management. Main strategies of the working with SHGs are Promotion and strengthening of SHG s& federations, Promotion of thrift, savings & credit.

Chavara Housing Project

Shelter for the poor provide great relief and brings happiness for the families who have the distant dream of a small home. STARS gave priority to this area and have constructed houses for the poor and marginalized families in its working areas. Apart from house construction, the organization supports partially for building/renovating the needy houses.

Karshaka Vayojana Samajam (KVS)

Empowering farmers is a key focus area of STARS. During the years, STARS has formed 9 units of KVS in Pulpally Panchayath of Wayand district. The leaders of the groups were equipped with skills and knowledge by conducting leadership trainings. Education scholarships were given to the children of the KVS. Extended medical help and many other charity works organised under KVS. Under this project we started 20 units of Karshaka Samajam.

Star Mahila Samajam

STAR Mahila Samajam is a society registered under the society registration act of 1860. Under the supervision of this society, a stabilizer unit was set up for creating employment opportunities for the poor women in the locality. The main objective was to help them support themselves financially. With this objective in mind a production unit of V -Guard Stabilizer was established. At present 24 women are working in this unit. In addition to income generation activities, various other programmes are also organized by STARS to ensure an overall development of the members and their families. The activities of SMS include support the scholarships for Children’s education, financial support for marriages, awareness class for women, day care, picnic outings and vacation classes for the children of low income families.

Tribal Development

STARS initiated this new venture in the year 2019 to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of CMI Province Kozhikode. We have adopted the Thazhkapu tribal colony in Wayand district where 52 tribal families are living. In the beginning we started with an integral survey with the help of the brothers studying theology. Later the following activities and programs were organized in this tribal village.

  • Exposure cum Picnic for the tribal children,
  • Distributed study materials for tribal students,
  • Financial support given for Uruuvsavu,
  • Awareness class organized for the tribal community on health and hygiene.

A new project was developed for the education and nutrition development of the tribal children and empowerment of tribal community. The project was submitted to a funding agency and under processing.

Snehaparsham

This is another new initiative of STARS for the development of the destitute and marginalised people of the society. We have mobilized the widows and formed their groups in Pulpally Panchayth of Wayand district. As of now more than 100 members are took part in this widow group. One awareness class was conducted for members.

Joint Liability Groups (JLGs)

In India, more than two third farmers belong to small and marginal category. NABARD supported JLG program is especially for those small and marginal farmers who do not have their own agriculture land or haves very small holding size.

JLGs are the group of 4 such farmers who take mutual guarantee for repaying the loans. STARS is supporting and organizing such resource less farmers who are in need for agriculture credits. With collaboration with CANARA Bank, STARS has formed 91 JLGs and have more target to form JLGs and links them with banks with a commitment to motivate the farmers to use the available credit for productive purposes.

Livelihood & Enterprise Development Program (LEDP)

To ensure a sustainable development among small & marginalized farmers in Perambra block, Kozhikode and with specific objectives to develop apiculture as a hobby & sustainable income generation practices, the STARS in a great collaboration with NABARD has started a new livelihood & Enterprise Development Program (LEDP) on “Promotion of Beekeeping” in Kozhikode District, Kerala. Under this LEDP project STARS will train 120 SHGs/JLGs members in 4 batches. Rev Fr Thomas Thekkel CMI, Provincial CMI St.Thomas Province Kozhikode inaugurated the LEDP project.
