Malabar region in Kerala is vulnerable in terms of natural and human-made disasters. Frequent onslaught of the floods, cyclone and summer fire are some of the disasters that hit the area. The worst suffer is the rural community. Shouldering the responsibility of minimizing vulnerability of the rural community, STARS took up the task of community managed disaster risk reduction (CMDRR) in the areas where the calamities have occurred.
STARS supported the poor people to restore their livelihood assets, constructed the fully damaged houses and renovated the partially damaged houses.
STARS concentrating more on Edapuzha area constructed 10 houses for the poor and the marginalized. Partial support was given to another 10 families for building/renovating their houses. Sixteen houses were built for the Dalit Christians in Kozhikode and Kannur Dioceses. Of these, 8 houses were financed by CMI ashrams and the remaining by the department of Social Work Apostolate
